Jewellery Trade FAQs for Voluntary Code of Conduct for Authenticating Canadian Diamond Claims

The objective of this Code is to provide a minimum standard for authenticating a Canadian diamond claim. This Code applies only to diamonds marketed as Canadian.

1. Do I have to become a member to the Code to make a Canadian Diamond Claim?

No, but all retailers who are making Canadian diamond claims must be able to substantiate their claims. The inability to substantiate such claims could find them in contravention of the Competition Act. If you do become a Code member, you must comply with the Code and display in plain view a Canadian Diamond Code Committee (CDCC) approved Member decal or sign indicating compliance with the Code.

2. How do I become a member to the Code?

Contact the Canadian Diamond Code Committee (CDCC) at 1-416-363-2968, by fax at 1-416-363-7090 or by email at info@canadiandiamondcodeofconduct.ca

3. Where do I get a registration form ?

Go to www.canadiandiamondcodeofconduct.ca and click on Code Member Registration Form.
You may also call 1-416-363-2968 to request a form.

4. Is there a registration fee for members?

Yes. The annual fee is as follows:

Segment Fee Notes
Mines $ 1050
Traders, manufacturers $ 525
Chains ($125 per store) $ 2600
Chains + web sales $ 2600 plus use of logo fee as per Canadian diamond sales
Retailers $ 135
Retailers + web site sales $ 135 plus use of logo fee as per Canadian diamond sales
Labs $ 525
Dot-com no logo $ 525
Dot-com plus logo $ 525 plus use of logo fee as per Canadian diamond sales

5. How do I know which diamond traders and manufacturers are Code members?

You may ask your supplier if he/she is a Code member. The Code Committee will publish and maintain on its website a list of all Code members who gave the authorization in the Member Registration Form. Go to www.canadiandiamondcodeofconduct.ca and click on Code Member Registry. You may also obtain confirmation of Code members by contacting the CDCC. All Code members must ensure that they purchase Canadian diamonds from suppliers that abide by the minimum requirements outlined in the Code if they wish to represent these diamonds as Canadian.

6. What happens if you are a Code member and you have failed to authenticate your claims?

A Code member found in non-compliance with this Code will be removed as a Code member from the Code Registry. Failure to authenticate diamonds represented as Canadian may lead to an investigation by the Competition Bureau and subsequent enforcement action pursued under the false or misleading representations provisions of the Competition Act.
